Tourists often come to Noosa for its legendary kite surfing alone, although there are many other activities to choose between, such as walking trails, sightseeing coach tours to nearby villages in the hinterland area, and fishing trips. Cruises along the Noosa River are strongly advised and head towards the Everglades area of the Great Sandy National Park. Many holidaymakers also choose to check out the Tewantin Forest Reserve, where the lush rainforest is rather dominated by the towering Mount Tinbeerwah. Marking the end of the Sunshine Coast, this park features a network of pathways, various picnic spots and plenty of vantage points, where you can take a break and admire some impressive coastal views. Those with a keen eye or a pair of binoculars may even be able to spot dolphins swimming around the bay. Located in the small town of Pomona, close to the base of Mount Cooroora, the Noosa Museum documents a wealth of local heritage and suits those looking to learn more about the history of this part of Queensland. In the suburb of Eumundi, the popular Eumundi Museum contains countless historic photographs and artefacts, while in Tewantin, the Noosa Regional Gallery stands out and contains paintings of the Sunshine Coast and the Kakaku region, along with changing contemporary exhibitions and a number of themed workshops for all ages. Notable excursions include beaches along the Cooloola Coast, Lake Cooroibah, Lake Cootharaba and Boreen Point. Also popular with day trippers is the Bunya Mountains National Park, the Kondalilla National Park and the Mapleton Falls National Park, as well as the towns of Maleny, Nambour, Yandina and Rainbow Beach. Just a relatively short drive away and directly north of the Noosa National Park, the Australia Zoo (of Steve Irwin fame) makes for the perfect family day out and features the opportunity to get close-up to large crocodiles, pet koalas, feed elephants and even walk with Sumatran tigers. A little more than a two-hour drive from Noosa, the buzzing metropolis of Brisbane is worth considering if you are prepared to leave early in the morning.
